Children’s Workshop on Good Practices for Sportfishing Held Successfully in Paquera

This past Saturday, June 7th 2025, a successful children’s workshop on Good Practices for Sportfishing was held here in Paquera, organized by the local youth association (Asociación de Desarrollo Específico de Juventud en Paquera -ADEJ) in collabor

ation with Isla Chiquita, FECOP (Costa Rican Federation of Fishing), and the international Passport to Fishing program from the IGFA (International Game Fish Association) — an educational initiative that has benefited more than 100,000 children worldwide.

For the last two years, we at Bahia Rica Adventures has been actively involved as members of the Youth Association and we are delighted to be part of the organizing teams of events like this one.

Sport fishing workshop for kids

The event brought together 35 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 14, including 10 girls, who throughout the day learned in a fun and hands-

on way about assembling rods and reels, tying fishing knots, identifying marine species, and the importance of responsible fishing through the catch-and-release technique.

The workshop was made possible thanks to FECOP’s partnership with Isla Chiquita and the valuable support from us here at Bahía Rica, both of which contributed four experienced sportfishing captains, who, together with representatives from FECOP, guided the children through various educational stations.

In addition to the training activities, the children enjoyed tasty snacks courtesy of Tortuga Vida Boutique Hotel, and a delicious lunch provided by Isla Chiquita. At the end of the day, each participant received their official IGFA Fishing Passport and a diploma, as recognition for their participation and effort.

Activities like this one, promoted by the Asociación de Desarrollo Específico de Juventud en Paquera (ADEJ), not only foster learning but also raise environmental awareness and encourage respect for our marine resources, planting a seed of sustainability in the new generations of the Paquera community.

We are already in the preparation phases of the next events:

  • Local fishing tournament for children
  • Workshop on Good practices for catch and release for captains and crew
  • Women’s Nautical School – promoting labor inclusion for women in the sport fishing field.

Paddle for a Cleaner Gulf of Nicoya

Kayak Ocean Clean Up

Kayak Ocean Cleanup Program: Paddle for a Cleaner Gulf of Nicoya

At Bahía Rica, we believe in protecting the natural beauty of the Gulf of Nicoya, and we’re inviting you to join our mission! Through our Kayak Ocean Cleanup Program, you can combine adventure with making a difference.

We lend out our kayaks free of charge to anyone willing to dedicate some time to paddling through the stunning Paquera Bay while collecting floating garbage. This initiative is a hands-on way to help preserve the pristine waters and marine life we all cherish.

While some debris may wash up on the beaches, much of it floats in the ocean, harming wildlife and disrupting the ecosystem. By participating in the cleanup, you’re not only enjoying the breathtaking surroundings but also playing an active role in restoring the bay’s natural balance.

Every effort counts, and together, we can make a significant impact. So, grab a paddle, enjoy the beauty of the Gulf, and help us keep these waters clean for generations to come. Join us in protecting this paradise we call home!

Whales, whales and more whales!

The whales are in and our waters have some of the best whale watching opportunities around. Lots of humpback moms with babies. It is common to also see dolphins, turtles and sometimes other types of whales as well.
Do not miss out on the opportunity to a close encounter with these gentle giants. We see them plentiful here in the Gulf of Nicoya in August, September and some whales hang out for a while in October and November as well.

As of now this is the ferry schedule. Please note that schedules are subject to change so it is always a good idea to check for updates before your journey

ferry schedule
This also affects the bus schedule here on the peninsula as the bus is coordinated with the ferry.

You can buy the ferry tickets online: www.quickpaycr.com

They only sell about one third of the tickets online, so if you cannot buy online you can just go to the ferry port and pay in the ticket office. In this case it is good to be there an hour before on regular day. I peak season or weekend days, you might want to be there earlier still.
