When Captain Thomas Jones unmoors his 25-foot “super panga,” the Mono Congo, or Howler Monkey, and motors out into Gulf of Nicoya, the boat’s namesakes hoot lewdly from the mango trees near the beach.

It is just a little after dawn and anticipation hangs in the air along with the metallic tang of seaspray. A Costa Rican Coast Guard cruiser accompanied by a sleek, gray interceptor boat lurks in the middle of the gulf, easily visible from the slice of beachfront land where Jones and his wife, Vigdis Vatshaug, run their Bahía Rica Sportfishing and Kayaking Lodge……

Fund raising event for the primary school

We are fond of the little primary school here at Punta Cuchillo, and were happy to help out with the fund raising event they organized on Sunday the 8th of April.

We at Bahia Rica were responsible for the activities. We had some football games (of course), volleyball, BumBall and a kayaking race. It was a nice day and we were happy to see that also people from outside the community came. After dark we stayed on and danced marimba, cumbia, salsa and reggeton…..

For those of you that helped out raising funds for the water purification for the school a couple of years ago – we want to say thanks once again! If not for your help the school might have been closed.

To see pictures from the event check our photo album on Facebook.

There are living lights in the ocean. They are beautiful, fascinating and critical to the very existence of most marine life. They are also little known and little appreciated, because so few people have the opportunity to see them with their own eyes. In the Gulf of Nicoya however we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see bioluminescence almost every evening. We can take you out for a little kayaking tour after dark and you will get a rare glimpse of this remarkable phenomenon.

Visible light made by living creatures is known as bioluminescence. In this area the ocean bioluminescent creatures are so abundant that any disturbance such as a boat, a fish or, as you will see from your kayak, even a hand passing through the water can produce a shimmering light show.

The water around your kayak will light up as you create waves, and every paddle stroke is like fireworks. We paddle close to the rocks in the shallow water and can “see” the fish swimming away by the light from the bioluminescence.

It is magical!!

We are looking forward to a special kayaking adventure in January 2013.

We have anew partnership with Hvitserk & Eventyrreiser in Norway, and together with them we will organize a different kayaking experience in Costa Rica.

We will start of on the East coast in Tortugero where we will discover the deep mangrove areas and canals, and if we are lucky see the turtles come up at night to lay their eggs on the beaches. From there we have a quick stop over inland where we will raft (or river kayak) down the Rio Paquare.

The last part of the adventure is here on the west coast where we will take the kayakers out in our well known waters of the Gulf of Nicoya. In between the kayaking they will visit the Barra Honda Caves, Montezuma, Curu Wildlife Refuge and of course do some sportfishing with us here at Bahia Rica!
