With 2012 just around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to thank you for your support this past year in making Bahia Rica fishing and kayak lodge great place to be. We have truly enjoyed a lot of great moments with you our guests, either fishing, kayaking or just nice chats around the dinner table. We appreciate it, and look forward to 2012.

This year we strived to deliver good and personalized service and to “spread the word” a about our existence. A special thanks to all of you that have told a friend about us, written on TripAdvisor and Aftenposten Reiser and not least that follow us on Facebook.

Sea turtle volunteer program

WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP?

Volunteer with PRETOMA and live an unforgettable experience on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.

Over the last 12 years, volunteers have protected thousands of sea turtle nests and released hundreds of thousands of hatchlings back into the Pacific Ocean. Volunteers not only work with sea turtles, but with the funds generated through these programs help provide an income for local community members and serve to sustain PRETOMA’s various sea turtle conservation projects along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

As a future volunteer, your contributions will also build a sense of awareness among the local population regarding the importance and benefits that come from protecting these animals—the true definition of sustainable tourism. Participants become immersed in the conservation project and the local culture, and speaking Spanish, while helpful, is certainly not a necessity (though you’ll have plenty of opportunity to practice!).

President to save the ocean?

On the 20th of December 2011 at the close of the Government Council session, Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla swore in a commission whose objective will be to diagnose, evaluate, and recommend precise changes for the country’s marine governance.

This new Inter Institutional Marine Commission is to study Costa Rican marine conservation and management policy. This is VERY NEEDED!

According to the President, the country must redefine its vision and outlook in relation to its use of marine resources with the intent of protecting them and devising ways of sustainable use for the benefit of future generation.

Our offshore boat ready!

Finally after many months in the factory, our boat the Conquistador, was finally ready to be put back in the water after extensive remodeling. We got rid of the inboard and replaced it 2 x 250 Hp Evinrude Etecs. The boat cruises comfortably at 26-28 knots and maxes out well over 50… We look forward to using it for some exciting offshore fishing adventures.

Responsible fishing

At Bahia Rica our “office” is out on the water, either fishing, kayaking or cruising to a nearby island. There is still a lot of fish and other sea life in this area, but it needs to be protected. We already have a problem with over-fishing.

Together with local fishermen, divers, aqua culture projects and other tourist businesses we have founded ASPARMAR (Asociación Paquereña para el Aprovechamiento de Recursos Marinos). Our main aim is to create an area for responsible fishing, and first of all get rid off the illegal fishing that is going on at the moment.

Bahia Rica goes mobile

Times are changing, and even though we are in the jungle we try to keep up!

Mobile web browsing is rapidly overtaking PC / lap top web browsing, forcing forward a new trend of mobile friendly web sites. And we see that people on vacation often use their Iphone or similar.
