Sunset and Full Moon Kayak Tour

A spectacular place for sunsets in the Nicoya Gulf.

We are located on the inside of the Gulf of Nicoya and thus the sun sets over the mountains, but because the Paquera bay is facing west sunsets here can be absolutely spectacular. On days with some cloud cover, the colors reflecting on the water are amazing and changing by the minute. As darkness settles over the bay, the moon casts a yellowish light over the water. On nights with good cloud cover it may be dark enough to experience the spectacular bioluminescence.

Sunset full moon kayak tour overview.

Our kayaking area is located 1,5 km east of the Paquera ferry landing. Upon arriving at Bahia Rica you will be greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable guides Luis and Jose. The tour preparation area is under the palm trees where Luis and Jose will go through the basics of the tour and give safety instructions. After entering the kayaks they will give additional instructions of how to use the kayaks if anyone does not have any kayak experience.

Once on the water you will kayak over to a small beach on the island across from us for a little rest and maybe even a little sunset dip in the warm water. At this point, our guides will serve up water, biscuits and fresh fruit to enjoy as the sun sets and the ever-changing colors in the sky do their thing.

Back in the kayaks the attention now turns to the low hanging moon. On clear nights, it is incredibly peaceful to be out on the water with just the moonlight to guide you. However on cloudy nights, it may be possible to see and experience the bioluminescence.

Having arrived back at Bahia Rica, there is freshwater available for washing off sand or saltwater. Toilet facilities are also available should they be needed.
This sunset full moon tour is only done in the week before the full moon and until the day after the full moon every month of the year. The rest of the month we do the bioluminescent kayak tour. If you are uncertain about which tour we are doing when you are in the area or have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
