QR code rule suspended

A Costa Rican court has temporarily suspended the country’s implementation of a QR code-based Covid-19 vaccine passport, according to multiple media reports.

Proof of vaccination would be demonstrated via a QR Code distributed through the Health Ministry. Foreign visitors would also be subject to the vaccine requirement, which led to pushback from the tourism sector.

However, the implementation of that vaccination requirement now remains in flux due to the Costa Rican court, which issued the suspension following a challenge from members of the tourism sector.

New measures for traveling and living Costa Rica!
Please read them carefully.

Transition period: Dec. 1st 2021 – Jan 7th 2022:

Establishments can accept clients without vaccination, but can then only operate at 50% capacity.

Starting 8 January 2022:

hotels, restaurants, bars, casinos, shops, museums, art and dance academies, gymnasiums, resorts, and adventure tourism may admit only persons who are verifiably fully-vaccinated (Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca y Janssen). This must be verified by means of a QR code or the printed vaccination certificate. This requirement applies to all patrons 12 years of age and older.

Essential services such as supermarkets and pharmacies will not require proof of vaccination.

Exceptions to the presentation of the QR code of the vaccination certificate to enter commercial establishments are as follows:

– Children under 12 years of age.

– Tourists who have a medical condition, duly accredited, that makes it impossible to apply any vaccine approved by the Ministry of Health of Costa Rica

Whale watching season!

The humpback whales are cruising the Costa Rican waters, and these months they come all the way into the gulf. We mostly encounter moms and babies. Book your special trip with us to see these gentle giants now.

We cruise around small islands, past spectacular rocky coast lines and beautiful sand beaches on our search for the whales. Sometimes they hang out more out in the open water, and other times they are all the way in close to shore.

We are very often entertained by the baby jumping and making a show, while the mom swims alongside it. Every so often we are rewarded by a huge breach from the giant mom as well.

A big thank you to everyone that have spent some hours in the beautiful Paquera bay kayaking around collecting trash.

We invite everyone to help us BE PART OF THE SOLUTION – NOT THE POLUTTION!

Bahia Rica Adventures works to reduce the amount of garbage floating in our coastal waters. The idea is simple – get a free kayak trip in return for collecting and separating the trash and sharing this on social media. We also share our knowledge, and help people of all ages get out on our beautiful oceans and take action.

Covid testing at Costa Rican airports

Both Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) near San José and Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, Guanacaste, offer on-site coronavirus testing for outgoing travelers.

This gives passengers the ability to get tested on the same day as their flight, and it removes the complication of having to find a nearby lab with availability.

At both airports, the tests are conducted by Laboratorios Echandi in a partnership with Morpho Travel Retail.

While walk-ins are accepted, the lab recommends making a reservation at: https://covid.morphotr.com/

First check what test you need to get for your destination country. This article in Tico Times gives a quick guide of the what, when, how and prices.

SUP competition

SUP ToursOur precious gulf of Nicoya is the venue of the first Stand Up Paddle race since the pandemic started – and we are participating!

SUP boarding is one of the activities we offer here at Bahia Rica, and the area is just perfect for practicing flat water paddling.

Here at Bahia Rica, Vigdis has always paddled a lot, mostly kayak. This year the focus has been on the SUP boarding, and she will for the first time enter an official race.

So wish her luck – hopefully she will make a good figure for Bahia Rica in the race tomorrow at O’Pacifico.
